27 years ago today

Today is the 27th anniversary of the May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.
Where were you at 8:32 am PDT on that date?

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - "Vancouver, Vancouver, This is it!"

It was 27 years ago today that U.S. Geological Survey vulcanologist David Johnston radioed those words to colleagues in Vancouver as Mount St. Helens erupted.

The anniversary is being marked today at the Johnston Ridge Observatory near the volcano.

Johnston died shortly after his call.

In all, 57 people were killed during the massive eruption that erased 1,300 feet from the summit of the once-symmetrical mountain and turned into one of the most recognized volcanic locations on Earth.
